Spain: The EuroGames 2008 Champions

July 3, 2008

As a soccer fan, I watched with bated breath as Spain triumphed over Germany in the final games of the 2008 Euro Games held at Vienna, Austria last July 2, 2008. After a 44 year long wait, the Spanish team is once more the European Champions.

Their first win was way back in 1964, and in the succeeding years never went past the the quarterfinals. This time, however, under the guidance of coach Luis Aragones, who was known in Spain as “the wise man of Hortaleza,” the Spanish team played with a brave heart and grim determination. Aragones was heavily criticized before the torunament for not calling up Real Madrid team captain Raul in his 23-man squad.

Germany had played a strong start, with team captain Michel Ballack at the helm. There were rumors, though, that Ballack wouldn’t be included due to a much publicised calf injury. But there he was, motivating the team to get their 5th cup.

Unfortunately for them, it only took one goal from Spanish striker Fernando Torres at the 33rd minute to seal Espana’s victory, thus beating Germany 1-0. What a great play! In my opinion, Torres should have been named the the best player by the EUFA instead of going to team mate Xavi.

So, with great pomp and celebration, the Spanish National Team returned to Madrid and were hailed as heroes. Praises and champagne overflowed, and the crowd just couldn’t stop cheering. To the best team in the EuroGames, congratulations!
